Talking about place value

We have been talking about place value, how to write different numbers (standard numbers, expanded form and written form). The students have been using the smart notebook to order and compare numbers, they have been playing games to order, create and compare whole numbers to 100,000. Ask your child about the math centres.

Geometry Diagnostic

Today, we did a diagnostic activity involving 2D shapes and 3D figures. The students were asked to create a picture using 2D shapes and a building using 3D figures. Then, they had to describe what shapes and figures were used in their creations (trying to describe the faces, edges, vertices and the names). To help your child in this unit, consider helping them identify 2D shapes and 3D figures by names, describe 2D shapes by their vertices and edges and extend that thinking to describe 3D figures by their faces, vertices and edges.

The junior students have updated their work on their bloggers

Below are some of the creations the students in the morning class made:

Measurement is all around us

Today, the juniors investigated how measurement is a part of our everyday environments. We examined different units of measure we could use to measure things in our environment. Please visit the students webpages to see what they found

Morning Class is starting measurement today

This morning we were showing what we know about measurement. The morning math group was showing how to measure using non-standard units.
